Engagement vs Wedding vs Reception Makeup — How to Plan Each Look

How to plan different makeup looks for your engagement, wedding and reception so each function feels special — with tips on colours, finish and timing.

Most Indian weddings aren’t one event — they’re a story told over several functions. One of the nicest things you can do for your photos (and yourself) is to plan your looks together, so each function feels different and your wedding-day look still feels like the big reveal.

Here’s how I think about the three main looks.

The engagement look: fresh and elegant

Your roka, sagai or ring ceremony is often the first time both families see you as “the bride”. It’s also the function with the most close-up ring shots.

  • Finish: fresh, glowing skin — often a light HD base
  • Eyes: soft shimmer, brown or rose tones, a fine liner
  • Lips: rosy nudes, pinks or a soft coral
  • Hair: soft waves, a half-up style or a romantic low bun

The goal is to look beautiful without peaking too early. Keep the most dramatic elements for later. Read more on our engagement makeup page.

The wedding look: the most “you” and the most traditional

This is the look you’ll see in photos for decades, so it should feel timeless rather than trendy.

  • Finish: a long-wear HD or airbrush base built to last 10–14 hours
  • Eyes: more definition and depth, lashes, eyes that hold their own against heavy jewellery
  • Lips: classic reds, berries or deep rose to match the lehenga
  • Hair: a secure bun or braid that holds a heavy dupatta, with flowers or accessories

Balance is everything here: the lehenga, jewellery, dupatta and face should work as one picture. See our bridal makeup service.

The reception look: the glam one

The reception is usually your chance to be more glamorous and modern — a gown, a sequinned saree or a lighter lehenga, and evening lighting.

  • Finish: soft-matte or satin skin with more sculpting
  • Eyes: smokey, metallic or a bold liner
  • Lips: nudes with a smokey eye, or a bold lip with softer eyes
  • Hair: open glam waves, a sleek bun or a modern side-swept look

Mehendi, haldi and sangeet

  • Mehendi & haldi: light, dewy, playful — florals in the hair, minimal base, waterproof mascara
  • Sangeet / cocktail: this is where you can try a trend — glitter, coloured liner, a dramatic lash

Our party makeup package works well for these functions.

Tips for planning all your looks together

  1. Make a mood board with each outfit and its jewellery side by side.
  2. Don’t repeat the same lip colour across consecutive functions.
  3. Change the hair — open hair, then a bun, then waves — it changes the whole look in photos.
  4. Book the same artist if you can. Your artist learns your skin and preferences at the first function and refines them for the wedding.
  5. Plan timing — back-to-back functions on the same day need a quick, smart change of look.

A simple planning grid

Function Mood Base Statement
Engagement Fresh, elegant Light HD Soft glow
Mehendi / haldi Playful Minimal Florals
Sangeet Fun, trendy Long-wear Eyes
Wedding Timeless HD / airbrush Balanced, traditional
Reception Glam Satin / soft-matte Smokey eyes or bold lips
